Big Tobacco has used products like Camel No. 9 and the new "Purse Packs" to make smoking seem glamorous. However, cigarettes are not a fashion accessory. Please take a minute to contact the editors of SELF and Allure magazines and ask that they expose Big Tobacco for its ongoing targeting of women and girls. Below you will find sample letters to each magazine as well as a link to their webform. Click on the magazine you would like to write to and you will find a sample letter and a link to the magazines web form.
Also...Click here to quickly send a message to your Senator and Representative asking them to support giving the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the authority to regulate tobacco products. And go to http://www.deadlyinpink.org/ to check out the new report and video on how the tobacco companies are targetting women and girls.

[Sample Letter] I am writing to thank you for covering smoking in your magazine and encouraging your readers to quit. I am always pleased to see information about quitting in your healthflash section and appreciate the longer articles you run about this critical women's health issue. Since SELF focuses on promoting women's health, I thought you would want to know that tobacco companies continue to develop and market products aimed at women and girls. The products, such as the new Virginia Slims "Purse Packs," (the first redesign of that brand since it was introduced) glamorize smoking and appeal to young women and girls with their appealing colors, unique shape and "slim" and "superslim" design. As you know, there is nothing glamorous about lung cancer, heart disease and emphysema. Please consider writing an article about these new products and how they send the wrong message to our girls. Thank you again for acknowledging that being a non-smoker is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle! Sincerely, [Your Name] Click here to be connected to the webform for SELF magazine so you can submit your own letter!

[Sample Letter] I love that I never come across cigarette ads in Allure. I am sure that you don't get the credit you deserve for taking the high ground on this issue, and I just wanted to say thank you. I recently read about these new products called "Purse Packs," which are little cosmetic looking boxes that fit snug right in your purse. They hold "superslim" cigarettes and feature attractive packaging that practically shouts "buy me!" at women and girls. I remember a couple years ago when the Camel No.9 cigarettes were introduced to make smoking look glamorous, and now tobacco companies are at it again. I think it goes without saying that there is nothing glamorous about lung cancer, which has surpassed breast cancer as the leading cancer killer among women. I hope that Allure will run a story on what these tobacco companies are up to. It is unbelievable that these companies aren't regulated more to stop this kind of marketing!
