| The U.S. Surgeon General recently said that nationwide declines in the use of tobacco by youth and young adults have slowed for cigarette smoking and stalled for smokeless tobacco use after years of steady progress. In Georgia alone, 95,900 high school students smoke and 22 million packs of cigarettes are bought or smoked by kids each year. To increase awareness of this problem and help people learn about the benefits of increasing the per pack consumption fee on cigarettes, the Bump It Up a Buck coalition will hold an Atlanta celebration of national Kick Butts Day on the steps of the Georgia State Capitol from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Wednesday, March 21, 2012. The public is invited and encouraged to attend this local event. By bumping up the per pack fee on cigarettes by $1, state leaders can help make the 10,600 kids in Georgia who start smoking each year stop before they start. And, leaders will have a chance to change the lives of the 10,500 Georgians who die each year from smoking-caused illnesses. Bump It Up a Buck to help save critical programs and services, save kids from addiction to tobacco and encourage current smokers to quit. What makes the idea even better is that a bump of $1 will generate an estimated $340 million per year in revenue at a time when the state needs every resource available.
